How to pay for ChatGPT Plus in Egypt when your card is declined

ChatGPT works in Egypt, and ChatGPT Plus can be paid with a credit or debit card. Many Egyptian cards are still declined at the checkout, usually with "Payment was not approved" or "Your card has been declined". The cause is almost always the card's foreign-spending limit, not your account. Here is how to check it, what to try for free, and how to pay if no card goes through.

Is ChatGPT available in Egypt?

Yes. OpenAI lists Egypt among its supported countries, developers.openai.com/api/docs/supported-countries (checked 10 October 2026). Its billing help page, help.openai.com/en/articles/10421635, lists EGP among the currencies it can bill in and names "Credit and debit cards" as the payment method for all countries. It lists no Egypt-specific method such as a wallet, so on the web checkout you pay with a card.

If your checkout shows the price in Egyptian pounds, the merchant is still a foreign company billing through Stripe. Your bank may still treat the charge as an international online purchase and apply the same limits.

ChatGPT card declined in Egypt: the usual causes

Egyptian banks have limited how much you can spend abroad with local cards for years. Ahram Online reported in August 2025 that since late 2022 banks had imposed strict limits on using cards abroad, that in 2023 monthly overseas caps for regular customers were in some cases under a hundred dollars, and that limits were eased step by step after March 2024 (english.ahram.org.eg/News/551158.aspx).

Egyptian media reported that banks tightened foreign-currency card spending again in March 2026; CairoScene cited a monthly cap of about EGP 15,000 on CIB's basic cards. We could not confirm the figures on the banks' own pages, and limits differ by bank and card tier, so ask your bank for the number that applies to your card today.

Bank pages show how detailed these rules are. QNB Egypt's card-limits page (bebasata.qnb.com.eg) lists separate e-commerce and international purchase limits, marks the international limits on its Becard as "Currently Unavailable", and says: "Starting from 14 March 2024, any newly issued credit cards will not be eligible for international limits activation in Egypt and abroad before 2 months from issuance date".

When a ChatGPT charge hits one of these limits, the bank declines it and the checkout shows a short message:

Other causes are the same as anywhere: a 3D Secure step that was not completed, insufficient funds, a billing address that does not match the bank's records, or a prepaid card. Stripe lets merchants block cards by funding type ("Whether the card is a prepaid, debit, or credit card."), and users on OpenAI's community forum report prepaid cards being declined for ChatGPT.

Free fixes to try first

  1. Check the card's international and e-commerce limits. Open your bank's app or call the bank. Ask three things: is international online use switched on for this card, what is the monthly foreign-currency limit, and how much of it is left this month. Menus differ by bank.
  2. Use a card meant for foreign spending. Egyptian banks set higher international limits for higher card tiers, and some products are made for spending abroad. Ask your bank which of its cards has an international limit that covers the plan every month, and whether a new card needs a waiting period before foreign use, as on QNB's page.
  3. Try a credit card instead of a debit or prepaid card. OpenAI accepts both credit and debit cards, but banks often apply tighter foreign limits to debit cards, and prepaid cards are the most likely to be refused.
  4. Complete 3D Secure. Keep your phone at hand when you pay. If your bank sends an OTP or an in-app approval, confirm it before it expires. Stripe has a separate decline reason for this: "The card was declined because the transaction requires authentication such as 3D Secure".
  5. Match the billing details to what your bank has on file: name, address and country, spelled the same way.
  6. Try once, then stop. Many quick retries can look like fraud to the bank and to Stripe and make the next attempt harder. Wait, fix the limit, then try again.

Two other routes cost nothing extra. OpenAI's billing page says that if you subscribe via the ChatGPT app on iOS or Android, "your subscription is managed by the Apple App Store or Google Play and charges will appear in your local currency." Whether that works depends on the payment methods your store account accepts. And if Plus is more than you need, ChatGPT Go, a cheaper plan the tech press reported as available worldwide from January 2026, uses less of your monthly limit.

When no card works: we pay your checkout link

If your bank cannot raise the limit, we can pay for you. You open the ChatGPT upgrade page on your own account, copy the checkout link and send it to us with your order. Our person in the U.S. pays that link with a U.S. card. You pay us in crypto, so the Egyptian card limits don't apply. No password is involved.

The total is the plan price plus our 5% fee, as one number: ChatGPT Plus, 1 month, $21.00. Order ChatGPT Plus.

What to know before you order:

  • It is monthly. Each renewal is a new order.
  • Our card stays on the subscription until you change it. Cancel or replace it in your ChatGPT billing settings whenever you like.
  • Stripe checkout links expire, by default 24 hours after they are created. Send a fresh link, and if it expires before we pay it, we'll ask for a new one.
  • Users on OpenAI's community forum have reported Plus accounts suspended after many accounts were paid with one shared card. We can't rule that out, and our refund covers only a payment we could not make.

Delivery is usually within 2 hours of payment confirmation, 09:00โ€“21:00 UTC, and at most 24 hours. If we can't complete the payment for your plan, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, minus only the network fee of the refund transfer. An alternative: Claude Pro as an official gift

Egypt is on Anthropic's list of supported countries (anthropic.com/supported-countries, checked 10 October 2026). A local card meets the same foreign limits on Claude as on ChatGPT, but Claude can be paid with an official gift subscription instead of a card. We buy the gift and email you the link; you redeem it on your own account. There is no password and no card of ours on your account, and a gift does not renew by itself. Claude Pro costs $21.00 for 1 month, $63.00 for 3 months and $252.00 for 12 months in total. See how Claude gifts work or order Claude Pro.

Questions

Is ChatGPT available in Egypt?

Yes. OpenAI lists Egypt among its supported countries, checked 10 October 2026. Declines come from card limits, not from the account.

Why is my Egyptian card declined on ChatGPT?

Usually because international online use is off on the card or its monthly foreign-currency limit is used up. Egyptian media reported that banks tightened these limits again in March 2026. Ask your bank for the current limit and to enable international e-commerce on the card.

Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus in Egyptian pounds?

OpenAI's billing help page lists EGP among its supported currencies, and cards are the payment method it names for all countries. Even when the price is shown in pounds, your bank may treat the charge as an international purchase.

Do I need to give you my ChatGPT password?

No. You send us the checkout link from your own account and we pay it with a U.S. card. Each month is a separate order.

Can I buy Claude Pro from you in Egypt?

Yes. Egypt is on Anthropic's list of supported countries (checked 10 October 2026), so we can buy you an official Claude Pro or Max gift. You redeem it on your own account; no password or card is needed.
