Your card does not support this type of purchase: what it means on ChatGPT, Claude and other AI apps
Your card does not support this type of purchase.
You typed your card into the ChatGPT or Claude checkout, pressed Subscribe, and got this line back. It does not mean the card is blocked or empty. It means the bank that issued the card refused this kind of payment, and the checkout passed that refusal on to you.
What the message means
ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Cursor, Midjourney and most other AI services take card payments through Stripe. When a payment fails, Stripe receives a decline code from the card network and gives it to the merchant. This message belongs to the code card_not_supported. Stripe's own description of that code, from its decline code reference, is:
The card doesn't support this type of purchase.
Stripe suggests the customer sees the friendlier form, "Your card does not support this type of purchase." The important word is type. The bank is not saying the amount is too high or the details are wrong. It is saying this card is not set up for this category of payment: online, foreign, recurring, or in this merchant's business category.
This is different from the other declines you may see on the same checkout. "Your card was declined" is Stripe's generic_decline, which covers anything from a bank's fraud filter to the merchant's own risk rules. "Your card has insufficient funds" is insufficient_funds. If you see the "type of purchase" wording, you have a more specific answer than most people get.
The three causes Stripe lists
Stripe's support page for this exact error names three situations:
- A debit card that needs a PIN. Stripe: "Some debit cards require a PIN to be entered." An online checkout has no way to collect a PIN, so a PIN-only debit card cannot pay. Stripe's advice here is to use a different card.
- Cross-border restrictions. Stripe: "Some cards have restrictions on cross-border usage." AI services bill from abroad for most of the world, so a card limited to domestic payments fails. Stripe's advice is to ask the bank whether such a restriction exists and to have it removed if possible.
- Cards limited to certain business categories. Stripe names HSA and FSA cards, which "can only be used for certain business categories such as travel or healthcare." A software subscription is outside those categories.
Stripe does not list prepaid cards as a cause of this code. Prepaid cards fail for a different reason: merchants can write Stripe Radar rules on the card's funding type, which Stripe documents as "Whether the card is a prepaid, debit, or credit card." When a merchant blocks prepaid cards that way, the customer usually sees a generic decline, not this message.
Retrying with the same card, a new browser or another device will not change the answer. The bank decides from the card's settings. Change the settings, or change the card.
How it shows up on AI checkouts
The wording on screen depends on how each service builds its checkout page, but the decline underneath is the same Stripe code.
- ChatGPT. The upgrade opens a Stripe checkout. Some users see this exact line; others see the broader "Payment was not approved" or "Your card has been declined", covered in our guide to ChatGPT's "Payment was not approved". OpenAI's help centre says credit and debit cards are accepted in all countries; it does not promise that every card will pass its bank.
- Claude. Anthropic's help page says: "We accept credit cards and debit cards for all purchases." It also says the card's billing address must be in a supported country, and that "Even minor discrepancies, such as a missing accent mark or a misspelled street name, can trigger a decline." More in Claude card declined.
- Cursor. Cursor's payment issues page tells users to try another credit or debit card and to contact their bank. It does not publish a card-type policy. See Cursor payment failed.
- Midjourney. Also Stripe. A failed renewal pauses the plan and then cancels it, so this message on a renewal matters more than on a first payment. See Midjourney card declined.
What to try first
These cost nothing and fix most cases.
- Open your banking app and look for card controls. Many banks have separate switches for online payments, international payments and recurring payments. All three need to be on for an AI subscription billed from abroad.
- Call the bank and use the exact words. Say: "An online payment to a foreign merchant was declined as card not supported. Is this card enabled for international online and recurring payments?" Ask whether the card is PIN-only or limited to domestic use. That matches the causes Stripe lists and gets you a straight answer faster than "my card doesn't work".
- Use a different card, preferably a credit card. If the debit card is PIN-only or domestic-only, no setting in the checkout will change that. A credit card or a debit card issued for international use is the simplest fix.
- Do not use an HSA, FSA, travel-only or meal card. These are restricted to business categories by design.
- Check the billing address. On Claude in particular, enter the address exactly as the bank has it, accents included.
- Try app-store billing. If the service's iOS or Android app offers an in-app subscription in your store, the charge goes through Apple or Google instead of Stripe, and the store may accept a card or balance Stripe could not.
- Watch out on a second try. Several declines in a row can trip the bank's fraud filters. After two failures, stop and call the bank before you try again.
If no card you have will work
Sometimes the bank will not enable international payments at all, or the only card you hold is restricted. In that case we pay for the plan on your own account and you pay us in crypto. The total is the plan price plus our 15% fee, shown as one number before you pay.
- Claude Pro and Max: we buy the official Claude gift subscription and email you the gift link. You redeem it on your account. No password, and our card never sits on your account. Order Claude Pro, 1 month โ total $23.00. How the gift works: Claude gift subscription.
- ChatGPT Plus: you send us the checkout link from your account, and our person in the U.S. pays it with a U.S. card. Monthly; each renewal is a new order, and our card stays on the subscription until you change it. Order ChatGPT Plus โ total $23.00.
Delivery is usually within 2 hours of payment confirmation, 09:00โ21:00 UTC, and at most 24 hours. If we can't complete the payment for your plan, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, minus only the network fee of the refund transfer. Coins and networks: paying in crypto.
Questions
Is "Your card does not support this type of purchase" the same as "Your card was declined"?
No. The first is Stripe's card_not_supported code, a specific refusal by your bank for this kind of payment. The second is usually a generic decline, which can come from the bank's fraud checks or the merchant's own risk rules.
Will retrying with the same card work?
Not unless something on the card changes. The bank decides from the card's settings, so turn on international and online payments or use a different card, then try once.
Does this message mean my prepaid card is blocked?
Stripe does not list prepaid cards as a cause of this code. Its listed causes are PIN-only debit cards, cross-border restrictions and cards limited to certain business categories such as HSA or FSA cards. Merchants can block prepaid cards separately, which usually shows as a generic decline.
Can my account be the problem?
Rarely for this message. It comes from the card issuer. Account problems usually show as a different error or a block on the account itself.
