Claude says “Your card was declined”: why it happens and how to fix it

Your card was declined.

You try to subscribe to Claude Pro or Max, enter a card that works everywhere else, and the checkout answers with one line: "Your card was declined." Some people search for it as "Claude your card has been declined"; it is the same problem. The message is short because the payment system gives Anthropic, and you, very little detail. Most causes can be fixed for free. This page goes through them in order, and ends with what to do if none of them work.

What the message actually means

Claude's checkout runs on Stripe. When a payment fails, Stripe returns a decline code to the merchant, and the merchant decides what to show you. "Your card was declined." is what customers usually see for Stripe's generic_decline, which Stripe defines as: "The card was declined for an unknown reason or Stripe Radar or Adaptive Acceptance blocked the payment."

So there are two very different possibilities behind the same words:

  • Your bank said no. The issuer refused the charge and did not give a reason. This is the most common case.
  • The merchant's fraud screening said no. Stripe Radar, or rules the merchant set, blocked the payment before or after the bank saw it.

Stripe also tells merchants to show several sensitive codes, such as fraudulent, stolen_card and lost_card, as a generic decline. That is deliberate: it keeps fraudsters from learning which check they failed, but it also means an ordinary customer can't tell from the screen alone which one hit them. Your bank can see the attempt, which is why calling it is one of the most useful steps below.

The causes Anthropic lists

Anthropic's help page "Why was my card declined?" names these:

  • Card type. "We accept credit cards and debit cards for all purchases." Anthropic also says "we do not accept third-party payment processors such as PayPal or Venmo."
  • Billing country. The card's billing address, and the country the card comes from, must be in a supported location. The list is at anthropic.com/supported-countries; China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, Belarus, Iran, Cuba, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela and Afghanistan are not on it.
  • Address mismatch. The address you type has to match what your bank has on file. In Anthropic's words: "Even minor discrepancies, such as a missing accent mark or a misspelled street name, can trigger a decline."
  • 3D Secure not completed. If your bank asks you to confirm the payment in its app or by SMS code and that step is skipped or times out, the charge fails. Stripe's code for this is authentication_required.
  • Insufficient funds, temporary network problems, and a block placed by your bank. Anthropic notes that your bank can explain decline reasons that Anthropic itself does not receive.
Prepaid and virtual cards

Anthropic's page does not mention prepaid cards. Stripe does let any merchant block cards by funding type ("Whether the card is a prepaid, debit, or credit card.") and block payments where the card's country differs from the visitor's IP country. We don't know which rules Anthropic runs. If a prepaid or crypto-funded card fails while a regular bank card works, that is the likely reason, and no setting on your side changes it.

Bank and country blocks

Many declines on Claude never reach Anthropic's rules at all. The issuer stops the payment because it is international, in U.S. dollars, recurring, or unusual for your card:

  • International online payments switched off. Banks in Vietnam, for example, often disable them by default; you turn them on in the bank app.
  • Foreign-currency limits. Nigerian naira cards are often refused by foreign merchants because of FX limits; banks in Egypt capped foreign-currency card spending again in March 2026. See paying for Claude Pro from Nigeria.
  • Recurring-payment rules. In India, RBI e-mandate rules apply to subscription charges on cards, and some cards are not enabled for them.
  • 3D Secure mandates. In Japan, 3-D Secure is mandatory for online card payments since the end of March 2025, so a card without it set up will fail.

If Claude is not offered in your country, no card fix will help, and we can't help either. We also don't serve Russia, Belarus, mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria or Venezuela.

What to try first (free)

  1. Retype the billing address exactly as your bank prints it on your statement: same spelling, same accents, same postcode format, same country.
  2. Use a regular credit or debit card issued in a supported country. Not PayPal, and preferably not a prepaid or gift card.
  3. Open your bank app before you pay. Turn on online and international payments, raise the online limit if there is one, and keep the app open so you can approve the 3D Secure request.
  4. Call or chat with your bank right after a failed attempt. Ask whether they saw a charge from Anthropic and why it was refused. If it was a fraud block, they can clear it and you can retry.
  5. Try once more, then stop. Wait a little, try again. Repeated attempts in a row can themselves look like fraud and make further declines more likely.
  6. Try a different card from a different bank, if you have one.
  7. Contact Anthropic support from the help centre if a card that works elsewhere keeps failing on Claude only.
  8. Ask a friend who already pays for Claude to buy you a gift. Gifts are bought by Pro or Max users and redeemed on your own account, with no card needed on your side. How it works: Claude gift subscription.

When nothing works: we pay it for you

If every card you have is refused and nobody can buy you a gift, we can. You pay us in crypto, we buy an official Claude gift subscription with our card, and email you the gift link. You redeem it on your own Claude account. We never need your password, and our card is never attached to your account.

  • Claude Pro, 1 month: total $23.00. Claude Max 5x, 1 month: $115.00. Claude Max 20x, 1 month: $230.00. Terms of 3, 6 and 12 months are on the plans page.
  • Delivery: usually within 2 hours of payment confirmation, 09:00–21:00 UTC; at most 24 hours.
  • "If we can't complete the payment for your plan, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, minus only the network fee of the refund transfer."

One condition: if your current Claude plan is billed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel it and let it end before redeeming a gift. Order Claude Pro or read how it works first.

Questions

Why does Claude decline my card when it works everywhere else?

Usually because the payment is international, in U.S. dollars or recurring, and your bank treats that differently, or because the billing address you typed doesn't match your bank's records exactly. Ask your bank whether it saw and refused the charge.

Can I pay for Claude with PayPal?

No. Anthropic accepts credit and debit cards and says it does not accept third-party payment processors such as PayPal or Venmo.

Does Claude accept prepaid cards?

Anthropic's help page does not say. Stripe lets merchants block prepaid cards, so a prepaid or crypto card can fail even when it has funds. A regular bank card is the safer choice.

I tried many times and now every attempt fails. What should I do?

Stop retrying for a while. Many attempts in a row can trigger fraud checks. Call your bank, fix what they tell you, then try once.

Can someone else pay for my Claude plan?

Yes, with a gift subscription. A Pro or Max user buys the gift and you redeem it on your own account. We can buy it for you if you pay in crypto.
