Perplexity Pro card declined or payment failed: what it means and how to fix it
Your card was declined.
You chose Perplexity Pro, typed your card, and checkout stopped with a red line: card declined, or payment failed. Perplexity takes card payments through Stripe, so the message you see is usually Stripe's short customer text, and the real reason sits with your bank or with the fraud rules behind the checkout. This guide explains what each decline means, what to try for free, and what to do when no card you own goes through.
What a Perplexity Pro decline means
Stripe gives the merchant a decline code, but the customer sees only a short sentence. The common ones, with Stripe's own definitions from its decline codes reference:
| What you see | Code behind it | Stripe's meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Your card was declined. | generic_decline | "The card was declined for an unknown reason or Stripe Radar or Adaptive Acceptance blocked the payment." |
| Your card was declined. | fraudulent, stolen_card, lost_card, merchant_blacklist | Stripe tells merchants to show these as a generic decline, so you cannot tell them apart from the screen. |
| Your card does not support this type of purchase. | card_not_supported | "The card doesn't support this type of purchase." |
| Your card has insufficient funds. | insufficient_funds | "The card has insufficient funds to complete the purchase." |
| Authentication failed or was not completed | authentication_required | "The card was declined because the transaction requires authentication such as 3D Secure" |
| Currency not supported | currency_not_supported | "The card doesn't support the specified currency." |
Two causes do not show up as a separate message at all. Merchants on Stripe can write Radar rules on the card's funding type ("Whether the card is a prepaid, debit, or credit card.") and on a mismatch between the card's country and the country of your IP address, per Stripe's Radar attributes and rules reference. We found no official Perplexity statement on prepaid cards, so do not assume either way. If a prepaid or virtual card fails with a generic decline, a rule like this is one possible reason.
The other large group is your own bank. Many banks block the first charge from a foreign merchant, cap foreign-currency card spending, or keep international online payments off until you switch them on. In some countries this is the default: banks in Vietnam disable international online payments by default, Egyptian banks capped foreign-currency card spending again in March 2026, and Nigerian naira cards are often refused by foreign merchants because of FX limits.
"Your card was declined." covers several codes. Your bank can see whether it refused the charge itself. If the bank says it never saw the attempt, the block happened at the checkout's fraud rules, and retrying the same card many times rarely helps.
What to try first
- Check the billing details. Card number, expiry, CVC and the postcode must match what your bank has on file.
- Open your banking app during the payment. Approve any 3D Secure prompt or push notification. If the code expires, start the checkout again.
- Turn on online and international payments for the card in your banking app, and raise the online limit if it is low.
- Call or message your bank and ask whether it declined a charge from Perplexity, and if so, to allow it. Then retry once.
- Use a credit or debit card in your own name from a mainstream bank. If you used a prepaid or virtual card, try a regular one.
- Try another payment option on the page, such as a wallet button if one is shown for your device.
- Wait before retrying. Many quick attempts with several cards can look like card testing to fraud systems and make the next attempt fail too.
The same Stripe messages appear on Claude and ChatGPT checkouts. If one of these words matches your screen, see "Your card does not support this type of purchase" and Claude card declined.
When nothing works: a Perplexity Pro gift, paid in crypto
Perplexity has offered Pro as a gift through its official store, perplexity.supply, in 1, 3, 6 and 12-month terms, delivered as a promo code by email. You do not need a card that Perplexity's checkout accepts to redeem a code.
With Paidrelay you pay in crypto, we buy the official gift and email you the code. You redeem it on your own Perplexity account. We never ask for your password, and our card is not on your account. The total is the gift price plus our 15% fee, shown as one number:
| Perplexity Pro gift | Total you pay | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $23.00 | Order |
| 3 months | $69.00 | Order |
| 6 months | $138.00 | Order |
| 12 months | $230.00 | Order |
Perplexity decides when gifts are on sale and at what terms. We check that the gift is available for every order before we buy. If we can't complete the payment for your plan, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, minus only the network fee of the refund transfer.
Delivery is usually within 2 hours of payment confirmation, 09:00–21:00 UTC, and at most 24 hours. The steps are on how it works; coins and networks are on paying in crypto. We do not serve Russia, Belarus, mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria or Venezuela. Paidrelay is not affiliated with Perplexity AI.
Questions
Why does Perplexity say my card was declined when it has money on it?
The message usually stands for a generic decline. Stripe uses it when the bank refused for an unstated reason or when fraud rules blocked the payment. Ask your bank whether it saw and refused the charge. If it did not, the block came from the checkout side, and another card or method is the practical fix.
Can I pay for Perplexity Pro with a prepaid or virtual card?
We found no official Perplexity statement on prepaid cards. Merchants that use Stripe can block prepaid cards with fraud rules, so some prepaid and virtual cards are declined and others go through. A card in your own name from a mainstream bank is the safest choice.
How does the Perplexity Pro gift work with Paidrelay?
You pay the total in crypto. We buy the official Perplexity Pro gift for the term you chose and email you the promo code. You redeem it on your own account. We do not need your password.
What happens if the Perplexity gift is not on sale when I order?
We check availability for every order before buying. If we can't complete the payment for your plan, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, minus only the network fee of the refund transfer.
