How to pay for Claude Pro in India when your card is declined
Claude works in India, and Claude Pro is a card subscription. The usual problem is not the account but the card: an Indian debit or credit card that works on every local site gets "Your card was declined." at the Claude checkout. Here is why it happens, what to fix for free, and what to do if nothing works.
Is Claude available in India?
Yes. India is on Anthropic's supported-countries list, anthropic.com/supported-countries (checked 10 October 2026). That matters for payment: Anthropic's help page on declined cards, support.claude.com/en/articles/9402418, asks you to confirm that your payment method's billing address and origin country are eligible. An Indian card with an Indian address qualifies.
So if the payment fails, look at the card and the bank, not at your country.

OrderHow Claude takes payment in India
- Cards only. Anthropic says: "We accept credit cards and debit cards for all purchases." It also says "we do not accept third-party payment processors such as PayPal or Venmo." UPI is not on that page.
- Currency. Indian business press (Business Standard) reported that from 13 July 2026 Claude began charging Indian users in rupees, still without UPI. We could not confirm this on Anthropic's own pages, so check the amount and currency your checkout shows. Claude's pricing page, claude.com/pricing, also says: "Prices shown don't include applicable tax."
- Monthly renewal. Claude Pro renews automatically, so the bank treats it as a recurring card payment, not a one-off purchase.
Why Indian cards get declined on Claude
The decline message is short because the payment system passes on very little detail. In India, three causes come up most often:
- International or online usage is off. Most Indian bank apps let you switch online, contactless and international usage on and off per card, and cards often arrive with international online use turned off. A charge from a foreign merchant is then refused before it reaches your balance. If Claude charges in rupees, the merchant is still abroad, so this setting can still matter.
- The recurring mandate is not approved. Under the Reserve Bank of India's e-mandate rules for recurring card payments, as Indian business press describes them, a card subscription has to be registered with your extra authentication, and the bank notifies you before charges. If the mandate step is not completed, or your bank does not support e-mandates for foreign merchants on that card, the first or the next charge can fail. Some cards pass the first payment and fail at renewal for this reason.
- Address or verification mismatch. Anthropic warns: "Even minor discrepancies, such as a missing accent mark or a misspelled street name, can trigger a decline." It also mentions 3D Secure: if your bank asks you to verify and the step is not completed, the payment fails.
Insufficient funds and the card's daily online limit are the other common causes. Our general guide, Claude card declined, covers every cause in more detail.
Free fixes to try first
- Turn on international and online e-commerce usage for the card in your bank's app or net banking. Look for the card controls or "manage card" section; menus differ by bank. Set a limit high enough for the plan plus tax.
- Approve the e-mandate. When you subscribe, keep your bank app and SMS open. Complete the OTP or in-app approval for the standing instruction within the time limit. If no request arrives, ask the bank whether that card supports e-mandates for international merchants.
- Try a credit card instead of a debit card. Anthropic accepts both, but Indian banks often apply stricter international and recurring rules to debit cards. A credit card from the same bank may go through where the debit card fails.
- Match the billing address exactly to what your bank has on file: name, street, city, PIN code and country, spelled the same way.
- Read your bank's reason. Most banks log the declined attempt in the app or send an SMS with a reason. That tells you more than Claude's screen. Then call the bank and ask them to allow the transaction.
- Try once, then stop. Five quick retries with the same card can look like fraud to both the bank and the payment system, and make things worse for a day.
If you subscribe through the Claude app on Google Play or the App Store instead, the store bills you with the payment methods your store account accepts. Keep in mind that a gift cannot be redeemed until an app-store subscription has ended; see Claude gift subscription for the rules.
When nothing works: a Claude gift, no card needed
Claude gift subscriptions are sold officially: Pro, Max 5x or Max 20x, for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, sent by email or a shareable link. Anthropic says "Gift subscriptions are available globally." The buyer must already be a Pro or Max user, so if you don't have a working card and don't know a subscriber, we can be that buyer.
You pay us in crypto. We buy the official Claude gift subscription and email you the gift link. You open it, sign in to your own Claude account and redeem it. We never ask for your password, and our card never sits on your account. Your total is the plan price plus our 15% fee, shown as one number:
- Claude Pro, 1 month: $23.00 — order
- Claude Pro, 3 months: $69.00 — order
- Claude Pro, 12 months: $276.00 — order
- Claude Max 5x, 1 month: $115.00 — order
Three conditions from Anthropic's gift rules. Gifts don't stack, so redeem one before you order the next. If you pay for Claude through the iOS or Android app, that subscription must end before you redeem. An unredeemed gift expires 365 days after the purchase date. A gift does not renew by itself, so there is no e-mandate to fail next month.
Delivery is usually within 2 hours of payment confirmation, 09:00–21:00 UTC, and at most 24 hours. If we can't complete the payment for your plan, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, minus only the network fee of the refund transfer. See paying in crypto for coins and networks, and paying for Claude with USDT for a step-by-step.

OrderQuestions
Is Claude available in India?
Yes. India is on Anthropic's supported-countries list, checked 10 October 2026, so an Indian billing address is accepted.
Can I pay for Claude Pro with UPI?
Anthropic's card-declined page says it accepts credit and debit cards and does not accept third-party payment processors such as PayPal or Venmo. It does not list UPI, and press reports from July 2026 also said UPI was not offered. Check your own checkout screen to be sure.
Why does my Indian card work on Indian sites but fail on Claude?
Claude is a foreign, recurring charge. Many Indian cards have international online usage switched off, and recurring card payments must be registered as an e-mandate with your approval. If either step is missing, the bank declines and Claude only shows a short decline message.
Do I need to give you my Claude password?
No. For Claude we only buy the official gift subscription and email you the link. You redeem it on your own account.
What if I already pay for Claude through the Play Store or App Store?
Anthropic says you must let the app subscription end before redeeming a gift. Gifts don't stack with an active subscription.
